In the realm of my childhood, Autism was an enigma, a mysterious veil that shrouded the understanding of my family. Nestled within the confines of our home were unique characters who shaped my world—the trailblazing brother, Brian, fluent in a realm where Olde English became his first language; the father, a sage of the information age, speaking in cryptic tongues of DOS and programming languages.
Our abode perched atop a hill in the forgotten hamlet of Keter, a hidden gem known to none, not even to those a mere town away. My young feet stepped into the world of school in Boyd, a place more developed, more bustling, yet I felt like an alien trying to fit in among kind strangers. Brian and I analyzed, observing how we differed from the rest, adopting accents that echoed Northern newscasters, a mix of Seinfeld and unintentional pretentiousness. We learned to casualize our styles, adapting to the next cities we'd venture through.
As we navigated life's intriguing landscape, an unspoken truth hung in the air—between the five of us, Brian, Dad, grandma, grandpa, and me, perhaps four were on the spectrum. But Grandma, a child development specialist from the bustling city of Dallas/Fort Worth, enveloped us with love, nurturing our souls as we flourished under her care.
